What is a VIN Decoder?

A VIN Decoder is  a system that will tell you what every digit in a VIN means.  A VIN is a vehicle identification number. 

A VIN Decoder is not the same as a DMV VIN Verification.

Vin Decoders are an online resource (or paper manual) and DMV Vin Verifications are an in person (physical) inspection of a VIN on a vehicle and documents. 

If your vehicle is 1981 or newer it must have a 17 digit VIN. 

Most VIN Decoders require a 17 digit VIN to work, however there are some available for older vehicles that have less than 17 digits in their VIN/Serial Number.
