💡 Fun Fact: The VIN Wasn’t Always 17 Characters
Before 1981, manufacturers invented their own VIN formats — any length, any characters, no shared rules. Two different vehicles could legitimately wear the same number. That year the 17-character VIN became the federal standard, complete with a check digit that makes a single mistyped character mathematically detectable.
